The #20 Whitman Community Church is located in southern West Virginia, in the coal fields of Logan County, on Whitman Creek Road. The church was organized in 1931 and was built by Island Creek Coal Company. The coal companies built churches in all the communities and each community was numbered. That is how the church got its name, 20 Whitman Community Church.
The 20 Whitman Community Church has a rich history of seeing souls saved for the glory of God. The church has an open type worship of preaching—singing—testifying—shouting and praising the Lord. We are richly blessed with a tremendous choir and several special singing groups. The 20 Whitman Church has always been pastored by a Freewill Baptist Minister.
Our church’s motto is “The Caring Church”. We care about the unsaved – the sick – those with broken lives – children from broken homes – the poor – all the needy of this world regardless of what their need may be. Our church reaches out to our community through a television ministry, on our local cable television channel, Suddenlink Channel 17– a radio ministry on 96.5 Coal Country Radio – a radio ministry on WITA 1490 AM in Knoxville, Tennessee – a bus ministry and a Y.P.E. program.
We also provide a nursery for the children of those who attend our services which accepts children 0-3 years old and two Jr. Church programs, one for children 3-5 years old and the other for the ages of 6-10.
The 20 Whitman Community Church built a new sanctuary in 1992 which seats approximately four hundred people. We still preach: ¨ Jesus, as the way, the truth and the life ¨ Hell as a real place for all who reject Christ ¨ Heaven as a real place for all who receive Christ
